As the title says, The Croxley Master, is a tale related to British Boxing. I am not a boxing fan and have limited knowledge of the sport. However, I found this book both entertaining and informative. The setting is in the mining communities of the Leeds-Bradford area in the latter half of the 19th century. The protagonist is a young medical student in need of funds to complete his studies and set up a practice. He is a skilled amateur boxer who scuffles with and injures the local champion scheduled to enter the ring with the Croxley Master, an aging, but powerful former professional boxer. The medical student in persuaded to take the local champion's place with a potential purse of 100 pounds, which is more than needed to complete his studies. The story is well written in Conan Doyle's high Victorian style with great attention to historical detail and character development. Boxing fan or not, you will enjoy the book if you enjoy Conan Doyle's other historical writings.Product details

This is not the sort of story I usually read but I have decided that I need to start reading all those other books I've picked up along the way to be read someday.
What a fun, fast-paced and interesting story about a medical assistant who has no hope of coming up with the money for his final year of medical school until, while defending himself against the belligerent spouse of a patient, he ends up knocking out the area's best hope to defeat the Croxley Master.
This is not a master work, but still very good.
