DRAGON TOWN

In the semi-desert of the Karoo, lies a quiet farming community town - Hopeville. During the spring cherry festival, a motorcade glides into town, bringing with it an agreement between the local Mayor – Mannie Jacobs, the South African Government, and an Australian mining company – the outcome, Fracking.
Max Van Rooyen is a 17 year old orphan, now living with his thespian aunt Marge & his ‘best friend’ and wisest of Grandfathers - Sam Van Rooyen, a retired geologist.
Sam has spent the last thirty years of his life researching alternative forms of energy, and has lived ‘off the grid’ using a variety of intriguing gadgets. Sam, through the generations, has inherited a “dragon ball”, an oriental carved ivory ball with an amazing & mysterious history. This ivory ball also bestows great powers on it’s owner, by magnifying and manifesting their imagination.
Regarded by the local community as a bit of an oddity, and disillusioned by the impact mining has had on the environment, Sam is considered by the government to be a threat to the status quo.
Sam’s lifelong friend, Supa, a Bushman and former tracker from his geologist days, now works as a janitor in the Mayor’s office, and quite by chance, he comes across a document that implicates all the parties in the fracking agreement, and shares it with Sam. Unaware that Sam’s house was bugged (due to his interest in ‘free energy’) their conversation was being overheard in Pretoria, in the shadowy corridors of power. A few days later, Sam mysteriously goes missing.
Max, distraught that his grandfather has disappeared, and with Supa fearing the worst, they enlist the help of PJ – a ‘green warrior’ and agent for the International Environmental Agency who is in town, quietly keeping watch on all that’s unfolding with the fracking company.
The last of this group is Bronwyn, the Australian teen, also a new arrival in town – and daughter of the mine director. Used to the sophistication of Sydney, Hopeville high school is a poor substitute, but she finds Max’s quick intelligence intriguing, and quickly forms a friendship with the boy.
This group of unlikely compatriots is drawn into a dangerous world of intrigue within the small town, and as they search for answers, their enquiries stir up a hornets nest.
Sam’s abduction had been made to look like a burglary, and when Max finds the dragon ball amongst the mess in his grandfather’s house, the power begins to shift in the groups favour.
They find themselves up against Jake, the head of mine security, and leader of a group of hired mercenaries, who are prepared to go to any lengths to protect the interests of the Australian mining company as well as their shadowy partners in the government.

The age-old recipe for money, greed and power.

Dragon Town edition by Jonathan Parkinson Literature Fiction eBooks

Let me say at the outset that I do not normally review books. However I found this one through a friend of a friend and, as it was a first effort by the author, decided to give it a go. When I finished I asked myself the question' "Did I enjoy this book?" and the short answer is yes. In fact the long answer is also yes. There were one or two minor issues such a the lack of proof reading but this did very little to detract from the interesting and magical story line.
I enjoyed the story line and the use of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings magic worked well even though there was always a feeling that, whatever scrapes the central character encountered, would ultimately be sorted out through the use of magic. Mind you isn't this always the case with magic?
If one of the reasons for writing the book was to highlight the contentious fracking issue, then it succeeds in doing that, but do not expect to learn all that you ever wanted to know about fracking. I felt that the theme of fracking in the Karoo was there more to provide something to hang the story line on than to create greater understanding of the issue.

Dragon Town edition by Jonathan Parkinson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A wonderfully fun, original and pacey read. It does feel a little unfocused, but I reckon that with a second edit it could be up there with some of Ben Okri's earlier stuff.
Jonathan Parkinson has a written a magical gem of a book. The action takes place in a small Karoo town in South Africa under threat of "fracking" by an Australian mining company. 17 year old Max van Rooyen has inherited a magical dragon ball from his special Grandfather and uses these powers to overcome the baddies. The book is action packed and would appeal to anyone with a sense of adventure, an interest in alternate energy, love, the environment and a little bit of magic. Teenagers and young adults are probably the target market, but anyone young at heart would enjoy this book - I certainly did.
